But, in too many cases therapists behaved in ways that seem completely out of touch with the impact their decisions and actions had on those with whom they had a professional relationship. Legal suits and the cost of defending licensing board complaints cause professional liability insurance rates to rise, thus harming all therapists.

Values and ethics are a part of our everyday lives. Ethics is not just about morality; it is a complex dimension of personal and corporate life that can lead to higher performance by both business and society. All of us, especially those in the business world, need to make immediate decisions.

Learning Objectives

The choices we make need to be driven by our ethics. I was able to explore the standard ethical principles that I have learned from religions, work, family, role models, experiences, school and professional organizations, pick the most applicable ones, refine and polish them according to my conscience.

But I can still point to several specific instances of poor ethics where I clearly made the wrong call. Individual experiences of values and beliefs stem from the personal point of view, a cultural perspective all the way to an organization perception. Morals also relate to values and beliefs in that they help us determine what is right or wrong and how we as individuals should behave.

Creating a personal code of ethics is essential to clarify ethical thought, make us more aware of common ethical challenges and useful distinctions, to teach skills for dealing with them, and to apply the skills and improve ethical behavior.
