Camron Longmont Times-Call Posted: According to the Colorado Department of Education, Central students are making more than enough growth to be proficient in reading and writing within three years. Vrain Valley School District students performed better than their statewide peers on 25 of 29 Transitional Colorado Assessment Program exams this year, according to the Colorado Department of Education.
Vrain students' test results were equal to statewide students' on three tests -- third- and fifth-grade math, and sixth-grade writing -- and were worse on the sixth-grade math exam, measured by the percentage of students scoring proficient or advanced on the TCAP exams.

Matthew Jonas Although the school district's results equal or exceed the state's on nearly every level, a lower percentage of students scored in the proficient and advanced ranges in 14 of 29 areas measured by grade level and subject.
Nevertheless, district officials are celebrating some accomplishments: Of the tests administered to ninth- and 10th-graders -- a total of 56 when each counted by subject, school and grade level -- the percentage of students scoring in the highest ranges increased on 38 exams. Longmont High School students showed improvement in all seven tests, with more students in scoring in the proficient and advanced ranges than those in Niwot and Silver Creek high schools each showed similar improvement on six of the seven tests.
Districtwide, reading scores showed the greatest improvement, with proficient and advanced scores growing as much as 5.
Reading scores fell in fifth and seventh grades by 1. Writing scores rose on only three exams: The third- and ninth-grade results dropped by less than 1 percentage point. In math, only fourth- and ninth-grade results improved, by 1.
Science scores improved by 1. In total, 21 schools showed improvement on half or more of their TCAP exams. Teague said the district "did well overall" in growth, which is calculated by tracking individual students' test results from year to year.
The Department of Education calculates how much growth the median student must make to achieve -- or stay at -- proficiency within three years. Vrain's median growth is in the 52nd percentile, while the 23rd percentile is considered adequate. Writing growth is in the 53rd percentile; the 44th percentile is adequate.
More growth is needed in math, however, where the district's median growth is in the 50th percentile, but needs to be in the 59th percentile, according to the Colorado Department of Education.

The state completed the process this week to replace the state-mandated TCAP assessment on English/language arts and math. Although test results are only one measure of student achievement, they have become increasingly important in assessing student learning. In Tennessee used the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP, pronounced “TEE-cap”) to measure achievement in reading/language arts, math, social studies and science in grades 3 through 8, and in writing in grades 5 and 8.
The role of typing in the standards, PARCC and the TCAP Writing Assessment Postsecondary educators and employers regularly cite the importance of writing and the gap between student readiness in writing and the demands of college and career.
